Because Chinese people often live far away from their hometowns, such holidays are the only time in the year they get to see their relatives. Together with the Chinese New Year in January or February, this is the only time nearly everyone in China has a week off. This week is sort of attached to the National Day. Most important is the raising of the flag at 6.00 the morning, brought live from Beijing to hundreds of millions of televisions around the country, as well as placing wreaths at monuments for fallen soldiers. On October 1st, we celebrate the establishment of the People’s Republic of China, which happened on October 1st in 1949. It falls on a different day each year, because it’s based on the Chinese calendar. The festival originates from the full moon that happens around this time of the year, which coincides with the end of the Autumn harvest. The specific celebrations vary per country, although many involve lanterns and the moon, as well as eating mooncakes.
